Denver Zoological Foundation

The Denver Zoo was established in 1896 with it’s first full time resident, a small orphaned black bear named Billy Bryan who was originally a gift to Denver’s mayor. As a matter of fact, Billy’s adventurous and sometimes mischievous spirit helped mold the Zoo into what it is today! However, the Denver Zoo was greatly changed in the 1950′s as a result of a cooperative agreement made between the city, county and the Denver Zoological Foundation! Through the help of generous donors and support from the six-county Denver metro area’s cultural tax, Denver Zoo has evolved into an impressive 80-acre wonderland in Denver’s beautiful City Park.

The mission of the Denver Zoological Foundation is to bring about a better world for animals through human understanding! These days, 1.6 million visitors learn more about animals at the Denver Zoo as a result of this mission!
