St. Bernard Project

St. Bernard Project (SBP) is an innovative, award-winning nonprofit organization that ensures that disaster-impacted communities recover in a prompt, efficient, and predictable way. SBP is a regional and national leader in affordable post-disaster rebuilding and job creation for veterans.

The key to SBP’s programmatic success is its model – using volunteer and in-house skilled labor to eliminate the need for (and cost of ) subcontractors. AmeriCorps members from all over the country serve as client case managers, volunteer coordinators, and construction site supervisors, overseeing the labor of more than 10,000 volunteers each year. SBP saves time and money by exercising direct control over labor and scheduling, which also allows us to create well-paying jobs for veterans and other under and unemployed residents. SBP offers virtually all services in-house, rebuilds homes far below market rate, and carries out construction projects with much lower subsidies than traditional affordable housing models.

Disaster Recovery Lab focuses both on communities that are at-risk of disaster, as well as communities that have been impacted by disaster. For at-risk communities, SBP will work to identify and mitigate risks as well as address common barriers to prompt recovery. For communities impacted by disaster, SBP provides on-the-ground recovery work, while also training organizations to utilize SBP’s proven-effective systems and processes. Since its founding, SBP has rebuilt homes for more than 500 families in New Orleans and Joplin, Missouri with the help of 60,000 volunteers.

Your generous donation will help us to continue our mission—forever changing the lives of individuals and communities affected by disaster!
